Haverhill a hotbed of East Anglian rock and roll.

It is home to the erudite ex-Hullite DJ Dave Hammond who introduced us, via his Smelly Flowerpot Radio Show to Umbrella Assassins, who also hail from Haverhill.

This is raw and uncompromising punk rock music from the band who are using a “proper” recording studio for the first time.

The Crunch is a new recording studio in Norfolk which was originally an Operations Control Centre during the Battle Of Britain. Initially built in 1939 as a Decontamination Centre for chemical warfare.

This is the band recorded at their very best, by Mr Jason, live onto 7 tracks of a vintage 8 track reel to reel tape machine, using vintage mics, vintage drums, and a 70s little 5-watt WEM guitar amp.

UA Crunch

Umbrella Assassins Live At The Crunch delivers three tracks of uncompromising Shed Punk in the spirit of early Stooges, Ladbroke Grove era Pink Fairies and the Minutemen

Cambridge Calling is a series of compilations of emerging artists from Cambridge which has been curated by Dave Hammond whose fortnightly show on Cambridge 105 Radio, The Smelly Flowerpot, is a mainstay of the cities music scene. The first compilation was released in March 2017 a second compilation, followed in the summer of 2017. This latest release is the third in an ongoing series.

What started out as a vague idea to pull a few tracks together soon snowballed into the current multi-genre epics, fired by the enthusiasm of the artists involved. The more the perpetrator scratched at the surface of the local music scene, the more it became apparent how much excellent music there was out there.

Aside from putting some superb music out there, the aim is also to raise money for deserving charities. The nominated charity for this release will be announced closer to the release date.

A full breakdown of all the bands involved in this release can be found on our designated page.

This latest collection is the most eclectic yet which perfectly encapsulates the vibrant and far-reaching nature of the Cambridge scene

The album releases on August 31st

Our 200th release

After two and a half years of operation Greater Manchester based not for profit label German Shepherd Records has reached the milestone of a 200th release.

To celebrate this auspicious occasion label owners Ian and Bob asked the artists on the roster to contribute material for a compilation album. As with previous milestone releases from the label all proceeds will be directed towards a charity, in this case the Salford based homelessness charity Coffee4Craig which is based in Weaste which is close to the German Shepherd kennel in Eccles.

The compilation contains seventeen tracks and consists of a wide variety of musical genres reflecting the eclectic release policy of the label. From the proto punk of The Get through the psychedelic disco punk grooves of the Screaming Collective, a massive piece of post-rock ambience from Issac Navaro, the alt folk of Keltrix, and the rock styliings of Berllin’s PrunX, amongst many others there is fascinating musical variety from all over the UK, and all the way from Berlin. We are very grateful to JD Meatyard for contributing a track from his new album “Collectivise”. There are brand new tracks, new versions of previously released tracks, and remixes!

The artists contributing to the release are

Dystopia vs Utopia

Dumfries, Scotland based band The Screaming Love Collective release their second album of 2017 with “Thought It Would Have Been Better By Now” this June. Whilst the former album “Spirit Radio” channeled the optimism of post World War 2 youth, the new one takes a far more dystopian view of things with the realization that the jet-packs and space travels we were promised back in the golden age of Science Fiction haven’t arrived yet. Utopia has been postponed!

With sixteen tracks coming in at just over an hour the band, under the guidance of project leader Bryn Thorburn, deliver their “Psychedelic Post Punk Dark Disco Groove Sensation” sound mixing a range of genres and styles to create and exciting new listening experience which bridges genres.

Copies of the first album Spirit Radio are still available

The new album includes previous single releases “People Make People” and “This Tragic Universe” and clearly demonstrates the diversity and inventiveness of this great band.

Release date is June 23rd via Bandcamp and all the usual digital outlets….

A Whole Lotta Screaming Love coming your way

We are extremely pleased announced that we will be releasing a serious amount of music from The Screaming Love Collective in the next few months.

24th March will see an album teaser EP called “Orbital” featuring three new tracks. This will be followed by the debut album “Spirit Radio” which features singles to date, the EP and other new tracks. Later in the year the sophomore album “Thought it would have been better by now” will emerge.

The music is a powerful mix of hypnotic dance rhythms and psychedelic interventions, we think it’s rather special and cannot wait to share it with you.

Bryn has recently completed both albums and feels they are linked with the first taking an optimistic look at the world whereas the latter looks at modern times from a “where the hell is my jetpack”. The basic message is where is all the cool stuff we were promised as kids?.

Here’s teaser with the lead track from the EP.
